Cockatiel Poop

Question
Dear Reverend,
My Cockatiel eats his/her poop, is that normal?

Answer
It's in a cockatiel's nature to scavange the ground and there is likely no more to it than that; however, the possibility could exist that its missing certain nutrients in their diet and trying to recover them this way.

If you have your 'tiel on a mostly pelleted diet, it's best. Supplement with occassional seed (without sunflower seed) and always provide some fresh foods in the way of dark, leafy greens, beans (kidney, black, black-eyed, pinto, etc) and cooked brown rice or small amounts of pasta (whole grain preferred).

If you have a grate bottom to the cage, placing newspapers under this in the tray area should catch the droppings and is very easy to just crumble up and replace every day.  Wiping down the cage is easy enough too (we do it with all of our cages/rescues, every single morning and every night).
