Nesting Ringneck?

Question
My grandmother has a blue African Ringneck who is very friendly yet rarely comes out of the cage. She is roughly 8 years old and just recently has been sitting in the corner of her cage these past few days. She has pulled the paper out of that corner and stays there about 50% of the day. She is eating, drinking, and talking just fine but spends a lot of time down there. Is she trying to nest or something??

Answer
A couple questions first: 1. Has she ever done this before or ever laid an egg? 2. Is it just recently that she stopped coming out of her cage or is it that she rarely comes out anyway?

If she's surely a female and has possibly laid eggs before, as well as shown this type of behavior previously, it may very well be nesting.  If this is the case, it should be discouraged since egg laying depletes calcium and always poses the threat of egg binding (life threatening emergency).

If this is a new behavior and she's just recently choosing to sit in one part of her cage it's indicative of illness and she needs to be seen - hopefully by tomorrow.

There are a few steps to take to avoid nesting behavior (which would be wise) - so take a look at the bird tab on my site www.4animalcare.org
