Biting bird

Question
My question concerns my birds behavior. She(?) is a Nanday Conure, approximately 1 to 1 1/2 year old, and I am now her third home. She is very untrusting and will bite frequently. She has obviously not been properly trained. She is not so bad with me but is decidedly unfriendly towards my son. (he's 9 and is very gentle with animals)
Please advise me on training methods to help cure her of this problem. Also, any advise that would help guide her towards bonding with my son.

Answer
Since she has been rehomed it will take time to build her trust. Does she have a favorite treat? try pecans my jenday conure loves them. Let your son give her a treat through the cage bars every now and then as he walks by. Try to have him stop look her into the eyes and talk very quietly to her everytime he walks by just for a second each time - she should love the attention and look forward to seeing him. When he is out on your arm have you son sit right by you and talk to her then when she knows he's there have him start to pet her the back is usually a safe place. After she tolerates that put her on the floor most birds hate being on the floor and will want to get off aas soon a as possible have your son be the one who "rescues" her from the floor. Just continue doing trust build exercises like this and she should come around. keep me updated with her improvement --- Kelli
