Question
"Hey i have a 3 year old Blue-front amazon who was originally parent-reared, but when i went to see it it was semi-tame . The shop keeper showed me how if i grabbed the bird then put it to my chest it would climb up onto my shoulder without biting. Me being naive thought it was great and bought it. Now i can stroke it through the bars of the cage without any fuss and it wont even think about biting me inside the cage . It lets me stroke ti all day long and recieves treats from my hand. However when it is out if i put my hand near it at all it backs off , it only come near when i have a give it food, i tried putting my right hand near it then my left hand behind that with a treat but it would just try and lean over as far over the right hand as possible and if it couldnt get it would back off. I have tried to perch train it but it seems to be aggressive towards the perch biting it and refuses to step onto it at any cost. I really want to tame it so it will step up onto my hand and be a great pet. Hope you can help Thanks  John

Answer
Hello Jon,
Congratulations on your new amazon.
Did you leave him undisturbed for a few days when you brought him home ? you should have done to let him get used to his new enviroment.
Birds should never be 'grabbed',so please dont do it.It can be very stressful for the bird even if he dosent show it.Being able to stroke through the bars and accepting food is a great first step.
Cut his food back 1 half,as you having food will help you tremendously.
Open the cage door, and leave your hand on it,make sure in the palm of your hand is a bunch of treats.
When he moves closer and closer(which he will as he'll be hungry),stay still.
When he starts eating, slowly move your hand away until he has to step on it to eat.
Practice these steps everyday for 1 week.
Once hes confortauble with this, move your hand into the cage and press your finger onto his abdomen and push up a little. He will step up,or fly away.
Keep working on this until he steps up,once he does, praise him HEAVILY !!!
Parrots love reactions.
Put him back on his perch once he steps up and repeat the process every hour ( or when you can ).
After a week of practicing the step up command(oh and dont forget to say 'up' or whatever command youd like for him to step up) you should try to bring him out of the cage.
Most probobly he will just fly back in.
Keep trying taking him out of the cage and once you get him out, praise him,sit down and stroke him talking to him reassuringly,as he will be scared of a place he dosent know.
I hope i helped,Jon,
Good luck and tell me how it goes.
