Question
i have recently decided that with my knowledge of hand rearing macaws.I want to buy fertile eggs and incubate them and then hand rear macaws. The incubation is new to me,but this is what my heart is set on doing.i have found a supplier of fertile eggs which are guaranteed if they don't hatch.Meaning they will replace the eggs that don't hatch.I have purchased an octagon 20 dx automatic incubator and the person with the eggs is supplying me a brooder.i have asked as many questions i can about the fertility of the eggs and proof of their identity incase they are a fraud. They assure me and are willing to provide the relevant information i require to confirm my doubts.I have read you're comments to Cindy on the fertile egg opinion off yourself and taken this aboard.Would like any advise you may have about any of the topics involved with the incubation and anything you think of relevance to this email.Thankyou for you're time mark

Answer
Hi, Mark,

First of all, I don't believe in the "buy fertile eggs and incubate them."  A fertile egg cannot be without controlled heat and humidity for more than 5-10 minutes or fertility can be jeopardized (fertile eggs cannot be allowed to cool down, which can occur in less than 10 minutes).  If you're lucky to have any eggs hatch, do you have the time/skill/knowledge to handfeed from day one?  They may claim they can sell you fertile eggs, but incubating them is iffy in and of itself.  I've incubated many eggs with about 10% success rate (it's a skill).  I think this is where a person loses in these schemes.  A guarantee is worthless if you can't incubate the eggs.  Are they gonna say "they were fertile when you took them...it's your fault they didn't hatch because you didn't incubate them correctly."  I've never used an automatic incubator...many say the automatic turning can be a problem with parrot eggs.

I've never found any guidance for incubating parrot eggs.  You will likely have to use guidance for incubating fowl eggs then tailor the guidance to your experiences as you gain experience incubating parrot eggs.
