Question
Hi,
I have previously asked a question about my iguana, Emerald.
First thank you. Second I have another question.
Emerald's dewlap is hard and stiff. It is also a brown crusty color. Would you happen to know what that is?
Thanks,
Iggy Owner Brett

Answer
Hi Brett,
Is Emeralds dewlap getting ready to shed?  That can make it feel hard... but you say it is also brown and crusty...to me that sounds like its injured and has an infection. If Emeralds dewlap is big, , he /she may have stepped on it and cut it.  If you are using a heat rock, or if the heat lights aren't protected, Emerald could have burned the dewlap.  A picture would help greatly.
If it is draining gunk out, it needs to be treated by a vet and most likely oral antibiotics given.  In the meantime, you can wash it with a diluted betadine solution or even some antibacterial soap and then use some Neosporin ointment on it...remember, this is only for right now because if it is infected, Emerald needs to see a vet.
