Question
my iguana is 2 1/2 years old now and last year she layed 13 eggs although not all at once she did pass them all and last year she did quit eating when she was about to lay this year though she has not stopped eating at all and has appeared to have eggs in her since the end of april seeing as it is now july and she still hasnt laid a single egg but is having regular bm and is eating well i have set up a nesting box but she still hasnt laid any eggs i have called all the vets in my area and they want $6-700 to spay her plus i have to drive my iguana two hours to that vet the question i have is how can i tell if my iguana is resorbing the eggs or if she is egg bound without a 2 hour drive to the vet?

Answer
Hi Brittany,
Not all iguanas do lay eggs every year..some do..some don't.  Some may skip a year.  The only sure way to know if she has eggs is to have an x ray done.
I have one here that goes through all the motions of forming eggs, but never does. She stops eating, etc.
Usually when they are acting normal with eating, Bowel movements, etc there is no cause for concern. She may not have formed eggs this year or she may have reabsorbed them...again, the only sure way to know is an x ray.  You don't need to use a reptile vet for an x ray as most vets will know the positioning for the x ray and also be able to see if there are eggs.  If needed, that vet should have the ability to email the x rays to a reptile vet if necessary.
With you being in MI, you may want to contact Mid Michigan Reptile Rescue and they may have a vet they can recommend that would be closer to you and less expensive if a spay is necessary.
Also, igs seem to think that the process of forming eggs is a 12 week process instead of 8!!
