Question
My 10yr Male iguana has had a recurring abscessed femoral pore that protrudes out & has gotten progressively bigger over the years. It reaches a point then falls off/no bleeding/really never heals, grows back over the year.
Please advise.
Thank-you for your time!!!

Answer
Hi Michael,
There really isn't much that can be done for it other than a 3-4 week course of antibiotics that MAY help.  I've heard cases where some vets will actually cut out the pore but that isn't recommended.
It is normal for the pores to protrude, and when it's breeding season they can get very long and large.(an inch or more) They use them to mark territory by sliding along trees, etc.  The marking territory is what will generally knock off the large protrusions. Sometimes they may rub out the entire pore which will leave a hole.  If there is an abscess, I would think that there would be some bleeding or drainage of what is in the abscess, which with iguanas happens to be more solid bead like contents.
To help your ig, you may want to be sure he does have something that he can rub the pores on..even terry cloth towels can provide a good rubbing surface.
