eye infection

Question
hello, we live in south florida where the iguana population is plentiful and considered a pest.  yesterday we came upon a large male iguana  in the park that appears to be suffering from some sort of eye infection or possibly eye damage.  he's a wild iguana so there is no way to know if the damage was caused by another animal, human, poison etc.  his one eye is closed and looks like it might even be stuck shut from the fluids that are coming from the eye.  The fluid appears to be liquidly and is dark in color on his skin.  The other eye doesn't have any oozing but is also closed.  He looks pretty thin and is not eating.  we have offered him fruits and kale but he has yet to take anything.  he is in our backyard with plenty of shelter, water, and a safe place to heal.  any suggestions on how to care for him and his eye?

Answer
Hi Cari,
Short of capturing him and taking him to a vet, there really is no way to treat the eye. Since he isn't eating, chances are he has an infection from the eye or stress, but most likely it's both.  If his other eye is just closed, it may just be that he doesn't feel well, stressed and ignoring what is around him.
Iguanas do need to have uvb(sun) in the wild, so be sure he has access to the unfiltered sun..no glass between the sun and him.
As I said, short of capturing him and taking him to a vet there really is no way to treat the eye without proper prescription medications and flushing out of the eye to see what the problem is that has caused the infection there.
Its wonderful that you are trying to help him out.
Its also possible that someone may have shot him in the eye with a BB or pellet gun :(
If you choose to try to capture him, be very careful and use a thick blanket to throw over him and wrap him in.  You may want to see if you can find a wild life rehabber/rescuer in your area also. Here is a link to finding a person/group that may be able to help.
