Question
Hi! I have two iguana.  Zigi and Zeni I believe Zigi (which is around 3.5 years old) to be female.  She is a sweet iguana.  She has never once tried to bit or whip her tail at me or my husband.  And it doesn't seem to bother her when I bring Zeni around her.  No head bobbing or hissing at all.  Just doesn't seem to care.  My question is Zigi is going on 4 soon, and as yet to show any signs of breeding.  Is this normal for a an iguana her age.
My second question is about Zeni.  I believe Zeni is a Male.  (on a side not they are housed in different cages and different rooms of the house. I am NOT planning on letting them breed due to the millions that already need homes) Anyways, I was wondering how many times a tail can fall off?  Zeni has always had problems with his tail.  Just recently his tail fail off for the second time.  He's always had problems shedding his tail.  Lots of old shed won't come off. Oh and a third suggestions on helping old shed?

Sorry so long and thanks in advance

Answer
Hi Tara,
I am sooooooooo glad to hear you don't plan on breeding!!! Maybe Zigi can and give my big nasty girl some lessons on how to be a nice ig!
Many females never lay eggs....which is nice!! Gravid females can drive a person insane..just ask me...I have one that does just that. My other female has never laid eggs...yet..and she is 8 yrs old.
Hopefully, if you keep them apart, you won't EVER have to deal with the breeding "mode" of either of them.  I also have a 3 yr old male who thinks, that because there are two girls in the house he has to be "Da Man".   All have their own cages and can't see each other but they all know the others are here.
I'm guessing you are referring to a small portion of the tail? As they get older, the less amt will grow back. They can continue to break off portions of it forever. You might want to have a vet check it out to be sure that you aren't dealing with some gangrene in the tail which is causing it to dry out more and more of the length.  If this is the case, a vet can amputate up into some good tissue which should take care of the problem, if it is gangrene.
One of the best things I have found for helping with that nasty shed that never wants to come off is almost constantly keeping that part covered(rubbed in) with some good ol fashioned Vaseline.
