New Lighting Setup??

Question
I have build my iguana a new cage that should last his life-time. It is ft tall, ft wide, and about ft deep.. I was wanting to build a smaller basking spot about halfway up the cage with just a small Zoo-Med light.. But I don't really know how I should setup the main lighting. I have a 160watt Mercury Vapor Solar Glow Light, would that and maybe add a 100 or 150w UVA heat bulb be good? But my main ?? is: I have a 250w high pressure sodium light.. It would give off enough heat and I'm pretty sure they do give off UV lighting but I don't know if it would give off the right amounts of UVA AND UVB?? What do you think?
  Thank You...............Josh Rolen

Answer
Hi Josh,
You didn't post the actual size of your cage.
You don't want to "overkill" with uvb areas. You only need to have uvb/basking area on top shelf.
The Solar Glo produces both uvb and uva.
http://www.uvguide.co.uk/index.htm have a vast amount of info on uvb/uva etc.
When using a light that produces a high output of uvb, you need to also provide an area that is just basking temperatures with no uvb. With the MV lights an igs uvb needs are met faster but they still require access to the heat/basking area without the uvb.
If you are using the solar glo, there is no need to have additional UVB or uva bulbs in the cage.
If you make your top shelf in an "L" or a "U" shape around the cage, it allows for uvb/basking area and also a basking area plus the mid range temperature and even a cooler area.
If your cage is at least 3 ft deep, the above shelf setup works wonderfully.
Remember, you are not trying to heat the entire cage to a temperature of 92-96 degrees..only a basking area.  When the basking area is proper temperatures, generally you might only need one additional heat light(in addition to the basking only light) about mid way of the length of the cage.
To give you an idea, you can see my set ups on my webshots..link under my name.
For my cages(3) which are 3-4 ft deep, 6-7 ft high and 6-7 ft long I have a 100 watt Mega Ray MV bulb, and 2 75 watt outdoor flood lights. I also use two 4 ft household florscent tubes for a nice, bright home that the igs need. Avg room temperature in the critter room is 72 degrees.
I really think that 250 watts is way more than what would be needed.
Again, your solar glo produces enough uvb and uva for your igs needs.
I like using a temperature gun for checking the temperatures.  Also, be sure that when measuring temperatures in the basking area, its best to use one of the thermometers that has the probe on the end of a wire.  The probe is placed in the basking area at the igs level.  This  (or using a temperature gun) are the only ways to know the true temperature in the basking area.
