g-piggers hates veggies, hay, and chewing

Question
Hello Andy, my Peruvian g-pig is about 4 months old; I've had him since he was 5 wks old. Ever since I got him from a highly reputable caviary, he won't eat timothy hay (fresh bale or pet store varieties) or any veggies (except carrots -- and he loves fruit that I give occasionally). He does enjoy his pellets (fortified with vitamin c). I've tried leaving every kind of veggie in his treat bowl until they're nearly wilty, but he ignores them. He also won't chew on anything. I'm worried his teeth will grow too long; I've tried every chewable twig, mineral/salt stones, chew toy, etc. He even hates paper tubes. Should I be worried he won't eat veggies/hay or chew? (He doesn't even wheek! Otherwise, he's healthy, affectionate, and spunky.) By the way, he gets a lot of lap time and floor time -- at least four hours throughout the day, plus he has a huge, colorful cage with lots of toys he enjoys, so I don't think it's due to boredom. He loves to curl up next to my lab on the sofa (on a wee wee pad, of course); maybe he thinks he's a dog? : ) Thanks much, and take care, Cynthia

Answer
Hi Cynthia

If I were you I would get his teeth checked by a vet as a guinea pig needs to eat hay especially to keep his digestive system in good condition. It might be that there is something preventing him chewing.

Regarding the wheeking, some pigs do, some dont. No need to worry about that, but I would check the teeth thing.

All the best, and if I can answer any more questions, please dont hesitate to get back to me.

Andy
