Question
We have a 1 and a half yr old male, who's female companion just recently passed this summer. We watched his behaivor and he seemed to be depressed. We gave him more attention but he seemed to just want to sleep more, and didn't squeak or come out of his hut as often when we called his name. (He was a very social and active Pig) Just today we bought a younger female to keep him company. Since our previous female was just randomly added to his cage and there were no problems, we decided that because of his past record this would not be a problem. However, they've had two fights in just one day, and I think it may be over his food dish. He allows her to coem and eat with him, but if she touches the bowl and he's not eating from it, he does the standard fight teeth chatter, and she in return will do it, and then she'll chase after him. Should we seporate them? Is it to early to tell if they'll adjust? What should we expect next? AH Help!

Answer
Is your male neutered? Are you sure the new one is a female? If you got them from a pet store, they likely have mites and it is making them iritable.

You should have introduced them on neutral territory. You can't just toss a new pig into your current pig's territory without cleaning it. As long as they are not drawing blood, they should be fine, but you need to expand their cage and have at least 2 of everything in it i.e. food dishes, water bottles, hay piles, hidey houses, etc. Then they can't fight over anything.

You may want to take them both to a cavy savy vet and have them looked over to ensure they are healthy. Sometimes they fight if one is ill and weaker.
