Death of Guinea Pigs

Question
I have sibling guinea pigs that died suddenly at the same time.  I woke up one morning and they both had passed away.  They seemed perfectly fine the day before.

Answer
Hi Alice,

Unfortunately, guinea pigs try very hard to hide their illnesses, so often we owners have no idea that anything is wrong until it is too late to save them. It is a good idea to read as many books about guinea pig health as you can, so that you know what early symptoms to look out for.

As they both died at the same time, the most likely cause is something they ate, or something to do with their living conditions. Not that I am saying it is your fault; it is probably something completely out of your control. It is also possible that they were both suffering from a hidden genetic defect, or that they suffered a shocking trauma. So if you give me some more information about their general diet and lifestyle, I might be able to shed some light.

If this was a really recent thing and you want to know for sure, you could take them to a vets for an autopsy, but I believe they will charge.

Sorry for your loss and best wishes,
Jenny.
