Black Bear hamster-strange noises

Question
We have a Black Bear hamster that is around 19 months old.  Lately he has been making lots of noises, especially at night (or maybe that is only when I notice them).  They are a squeaky noise.  They don't sound so great.  He is never on his wheel anymore and will come out to eat out of your hand but it takes much more effort.  Any ideas on what is going on?

Answer
If he is making squeaking noises, and is acting less enthusiastic than usual, it is possible that he has an upper respiratory infection, which is very common in small rodents. He will need to be seen by a vet, as only prescription antibiotics will clear it up. URI's are very deadly if left untreated.

He could be suffering with a URI, or any other possible illness. I advise that you get him to a vet that is experienced with rodents as soon as possible, so that they can diagnose or rule out any possible health problem he may have, and determine an appropriate course of treatment.

Hope this helps!
