Hi John,

Although you can use chinchilla sand in a separate container and let your gerbils roll in it for 10 minutes/once per week, you shouldn't use it as bedding.  Instead, use Aspen or Carefresh bedding.  Also, Carefresh bedding is very absorbent, if you're worried about smell.  (Never use Pine or Cedar, which have strong aromatic oils that cause allergies and respiratory problems.)

You should just use Carefresh in your cage.  Chinchilla sand should be used sparingly, once a week in another container.  It should not be used as bedding.

Hi John,

No, there's no safe sand that you can use as bedding.  Trust me, your gerbils will enjoy rolling in the Chinchilla sand once a week - they don't need to roll in it every day to have fun :)
