Question
hi we have just discovered my hamster has a red round lump inside one of her ears do you have any ideas what it is and what i should do

Answer
Hi Vikki

The type of lumps that hamsters can get are cysts, abscesses or tumors.  Is the lump growing?  Has it changed in any way - i.e. color, is it bleeding, is there any pus?

If it is a cyst or abscess, then it will need draining/treating with antibiotics.  If it is a tumor, then it might just stay the same, or grow aggressively.  If it is aggressive, your vet will be able to advise you as to whether or not surgery is an option. Superficial tumors can be removed, providing the hamster is fit and well and not too old.

I would be tempted to monitor it over the next few days and see if there is any change.  If it does change, or gets worse I would advise that you get it looked at so that you can get a firm diagnosis.  It might be something that clears on its own, but if it doesn't a vet will need to intervene.
