Pulsing Hamster

Question
Hi, I just got a hamster a couple of days ago, my first ever. He seems to be very warmed up towards people because he let me hold him very quickly. Didn't bite, jump or anything. He is pretty young, just a couple weeks old although I'm not sure of the exact age. Anyways, my question is, when I hold him in my cupped hands, I can feel him shaking or shuddering, almost like a pulse. It doesn't seem like a sickness or anything, I just want to know if it's normal for a hamster to do that. It stops when he remains still.

Answer
Hi Chloe -
When a hamster is young and very virile, he will usually have very strong muscles and tend to tense them a lot. If the hamster is moving, it will almost feel like they are pulsing because their little muscles are so strong and tense, and they are using all of their senses to concentrate on what is around them.

I have noticed this in my younger hamsters as well. When they get older and more comfortable with their surroundings, it tends to subside a bit.

However, always keep an eye out for signs of illness and consult a vet if need be. I don't think you have anything to be concerned about right now, though, if the hamster is friendly, eating, drinking, active, and showing no signs of aggression.
