Question
Is it safe to use a vicks vapourizer in the bedroom if that is where the hampster lives

Answer
Hi Kiara

Thanks for your question.

Generally speaking I would never put any form of air freshner/perfume near a hamster cage because they have very sensitive noses.  As they are very short sighted they rely heavily on their sense of smell, therefore perfumes etc. can prevent them from doing this, or can cause respiratory problems.

However, when a hamster has a cold, it is OK to use mentholated products on a cloth near the cage to help ease congestion.  Therefore, I would think that in the short term it is OK if they are in a room with a vicks varpouriser, but not on a permanent basis, and not right by it. In this case, I would be tempted to try and relocate their cage, even if it is just overnight.

I hope this helps
Regards
Sheila
