Ferrets and food

Question
I have 3 male ferrets. One just turned 3 in June one turns 4 this month and one turned 2 in Jan. They were fed EVO ferret as their main diet until Proctor and Gamble purchased the company whom I do not trust when it comes to my pets foods.

Once their bag was up I went to the pet store to buy Zupreem which my ferrets do well on but they were no longer stocking it. They had no good ferret foods so in a desperate situation I picked up the best cat food I could find there "Taste of the Wild Rock Mountain Feline Formula".

While I waited for the Totally ferret and Zupreem to come in that I had ordered I fed them soley Taste of the Wild.

Within a week there was a noticeable difference in my ferrets. My oldest boy has always been an itchy ferret with dry skin but he was scratching less his coat no longer felt like wire and he smelled amazing.

My other 2 had always had runny poo no matter what food they were on but now they were solid and they seemed to have more energy. My youngest was called speed bump as a nick name for a reason. And they all were always a tiny bit underweight no matter how much they ate including their soupies.

I thought it was a fluke and once the bag was almost gone I started to mix in their ferret food. They had the normal little bit of upset tummy nothing huge. And once it was only ferret food it was back.

My oldest scratching all the time my other 2 runny poo and they smelled horrible.

I thought it was just them adjusting but 6 months later it was still happening and they had began to lose weight so I decided to experiment. I switched them back to the TOTW and now 5 months later I have beautiful healthy weight energetic ferrets.

So I am wondering is this an ok diet for them? I have been getting a lot of flack from a certain ferret group I am a part of. But my ferret vet who is well known in the ferret community is even amazed at how great they look.

Right now their diet is the Taste of the Wild, raw meat duck soups and once a week they each get the yolk of an egg.

Answer
Hello Stryker,

Reading up on the ingredients of the food you're feeding, it seems like it could be passable. That being said, the protein content is a bit high and it seems like there are too many plant materials in it to be healthy for long term use. That's what worries me. You might try adding some Totally Ferret in there to cut the protein down a little and hopefully add a little bit of meat sources.

If the vet says its okay, I'm hesitant to add much more, because I'm not a vet and there aren't many situations (if any) that I feel comfortable with superseding a vet's opinion. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help! If you need anything else, please don't hesitate to ask.

Sincerely,
Emilee Andrews
