Ferret Anal Glands

Question

My baby, Kyle Hello, I have a neutered male ferret who has not been de-scented. I've been told that he needs to have his anal glands expressed roughly once a year, but I feel that I would be more comfortable doing it myself rather than going to my vet. She put him under to take blood, and that was just totally unnecessary. I have been taught and have done it to my dogs, but I just don't know how to do it with a ferret. Is it more difficult due to the much smaller size of the anus? Thank you,

I have 9 ferrets with anal glands and have never expressed them nor needed to. They don't "scoot" along the ground like a dog and since they are capable of "expressing" the glands themselves if needed, I can't see how it would need to ever be done by us.
