Question
I have a young ferret that will be 1 yrs old this July. I got her when she was 5 or so months old. She came in a small rabbit cage & when I moved her in a 3 story ferret cage she had some issues adjusting (pooping on the top floor near her bed)-I figured she was use to this because of her original cage her old owners kept her in. I finally got her to understand that the bottom level in a litter box is where she goes potty-even use diff types of bedding so she can tell the diff between litter bedding & play bedding. She was so good that this that when she was playing outside her cage, she would run back into her cage just to use the litter box. I also got her to eat out of her attached automatic feeder w/o any issues (used to eat out of a bowl). All was great until I brought her home w/me for summer break. I know it has to be something w/the new changes, but she's acting out since day one and that was back in May. She's behaving so badly I'm considering selling her even though I want her. She refuses to go in her litter box! She evens detaches it off her cage so she can move it around & not use it. Instead she's been pooping on the first floor next to her water & all over the bottom of the cage-which some times falls/dips out of the cage onto the carpet outside the cage. Dug all her food out of the feeder (have to use a bowl now for food). I've cleaned the floors w/cleaners but no luck on stopping her. My family & I play w/her & let her run around, but she continues to behave so badly. She never was one for playing w/toys inside the cage so I don't if adding more "things to do" inside the cage will work. What can I do to stop her from pooping all over her floors? (I don't want to & cannot put litter boxes in these areas).
Thank You for your time.

Answer
Ferrets are not like cats and are not always litter box trained 100%.  It sounds like she is stressed about the move and probably will settle eventually although you will have the same issues when you go back to school.  This is what having a ferret is about - finding out what causes them anxiety and helping relieve it.  Research Bob Church and enrichment online for some ideas on how to occupy her time.
