cardboard biter!

Question
My little guy is named Karma and he is the best ferret I have ever had. He has never bitten anyone except when we wrestle(of course). But he has a problem with biting cardboard. if it is soft he eats it, but if it is hard he just gnaws it(almost as if it feels good). I don't know what to do he won't stop. I have tried the bitter apple bite repellent but it doesn't faze him. Is there anything else I can do?

Oh, he doesn't have a cage, he generally has my room to run around in and play. He also has a tendency to scratch at the carpet by the door whenever I leave.

Any ideas for fixing his little chewing problems would be wonderful.
thank you, peace and love

Answer
Morgan,

Karma shouldn't be around card board at all if he eats it.  It could cause an intestinal blockage.  Is that what you are using for a cage or does he never go in a cage.  Ferrets don't really mind bitter apple as you noticed. I would just get rid of the cardboard.  My ferrets run free most of the time but I have a piece of plexiglass that bends to fit in a bedroom doorway.  That way they can run and be out but can't get into trouble in the other rooms of the house.
Digging at your carpet is not good as all ferrets (usually) like to dig as they burrow in the dirt, etc.  You might get some rice as it's inexpensive and put it in something like a storage container that your ferret can play in but still get out of to deter his digging the carpet, or get some scrape linoleum and put over the rug where he is digging.

I hope this helps you and Karma.

Good luck and have a great holiday.
