Amoxi Drops resulting in Green Urine?

Question
Hello,

We just recently purchased a ferret when to realize our first ferret had become ill. After having her treated with amoxi drops the day I was to go and pick her up I realized our little guy seemed to be having the same signs as she was, not playing sleeping all the time sneezing a little, but still eating and drinking. I had him to see a vet and he administered amoxi dropps 2x a day. It has been two days now and all of the sudden I found my little guy hiding in the closet and as I picked him up he had no control over his body functions. He then urinated on himself for me to see that it was green. I have heard that green urine can infact be heartworm, but could it also be a reaction the the amoxi drops? Please help!

Thanks

Heather

Answer
Hi Heather & Ferrets:

I've never heard of heartworm causing green urine. It is a possibility that your little guy has a urinary infection, or even a prostate problem. Impossible to know over the internet - could even be as simple as not drinking enough fluids.

You didn't say what the ferret was being treated at the vet for - this could be something that wasn't completely cleared up, or it could be something new - let your vet decide tho.  Any green murky urine is definitely worth a vet's attention a.s.a.p.

I think it does warrant a visit back to the vet and let them draw a "sterile" urine sample (they actually put a tiny needle into the bladder to get a urine sample so they can see exactly what is/is not coming from the bladder itself).

It is not unusual when getting a new ferret for it to bring sickness of various sorts to existing ferrets in our homes....especially pet store ferrets, unfortunately.

Hopefully your vet can get this all under control right away. About the only thing you can do is get them back to the vet right away when you see any symptoms like this.

Best of luck - let me know how it comes out?

Sincerely,

Jacquie Rodgers
