ferret depression?

Question
I have had my ferret for about 2 years, she was a few months old when i got her. Her name is trixie.I put ferret vitamens in her water, and banana chips in her food because she loves them.
She hasnt had any past problems, unless her itching is one, I dont understand why  she scratches so much, I have tried moisterizing her skin, and she has no fleas but she scratches terribly.I am worried she is unhappy, she doesnt like to play much, and when she does she will just loose interest. For example, she will jump around and I will chase her or throw her squeeky toy but she will just stop and stare at me.
I am busy very often, so i will let her roam the house sometimes for a while, but makin sure its free of choking hazards or dangerous places.
I notice she will follow me when I am rushing or just trying to do something.
Then when i do have time I will try to hold her and she will act like she wants nothing to do with me.
What are signs of depression?
what could i do to make her happy?
I feel awful, because she seems so unhappy.
I have been tempted to find a new home for her, because maybe someone else would have more time and a yard she can play in, but i dont want her to think i abandoned her since i have had her for so long.
Im worried, please some advice.
thank you.

Answer
Hello Kaitie,

From the behavior you're describing, I would say that she is just being a normal ferret. They don't tend to be very cuddly animals. Its not in their nature. They are generally regarded as either hyper and crazy or comatose. So, her not spending that much time trying to cuddle with you is not an abnormal behavior. Ferrets are highly social animals, so if you just have a single ferret, you need to be that partner in crime for her and to be that bond. If you're worried about depression, you might think about adopting another ferret, although if you're worried about the lack of time for her, that may not be the best option. I don't know if she sounds depressed to me, but the fact that she's alone might be having an affect on her mood. Also, the fact that she follows you is not an abnormal behavior at all either. My three kids follow me around the house everywhere.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to ask.

Sincerely,
Emilee Andrews
