Question
i just got a puppy, (lab mix) - what size crate do you recommend?

Answer
Hello Debra,

The crate size varies greatly on the size of the dog.  I am basing this on a dog that will be about 50 lbs full grown.  I've seen lab mixes that are very small and very big -- so if this is not correct, please let me know.

For a 50 lbs dog, I would recommend either a 42" or a 48" with my preference being a 48".   I always recommend an open wire crate as opposed to the plastic airline carriers because dogs seem to not feel so confined with the open wire ones.

One thing I would like to point out, and this is just my opinion, but I never recommend following the advice on the box at the petstore.  They always suggest a smaller crate than really needed.   Most 48" crates will come with a divider that allows you to confine your puppy to a portion of it and allows you to enlarge the area as the dog grows.

Just remember that the dog needs room to turn around and lay down comfortably.   You don't want to give a puppy too much room as they will need it to be the right size to properly housetrain them.  As the dog matures and becomes crate trained / housebroken - you can utilize the full space of the crate.

Remember that dogs need sips of water during the day, so I always recommend a water bowl be installed.  The type I like best is the kind that attaches to the crate (less spillage).

Good luck with your new pup and enjoy!
