Question
i have a dalmatian who is 9 years old i move from the UK 5 years ago , live near the beach for 3 years and now i live nearer the city while in the UK Oliver was great with the vet and when he arrived here. Since moving nearer the city he has become aggressive with the vet that much i have to mussel him, also when people come round to the house he fuses them for a few minutes then he snaps at them . can you please help me, to stop this behavior( hes a lovely dog, never liked other dogs much but was always great with people)

Answer
Honestly, when dogs have aggression towards humans, the best help will come from a good positive trainer or behavior expert. It's not something that should be handled by internet advice. I would suggest that he have a full physical including looking at orthopedic issues, and bloodwork including a full 6-panel thyroid test, and if you are in an area where tick-borne diseases like Lyme and Ehrlichia test him for those. Both low thyroid and TBDs can cause grumpy behavior, and of course, so can pain or discomfort. Any time an older dog develops aggression issues, I'm always suspect of a physical cause. Another possibility is cognitive dysfunction (similar to alzheimers in humans. Sandy Case BFA MEd CPDT www.positivelycanine.com
