Question
I have a 9 month old miniature Doberman. He is very smart,he only took a couple of days to fully paper train, I chose the paper method because it was just too cold for him to be outside he was very small at the time. Then as he got a little bigger he quickly trained to only go when paper was put down for him (when i'm not home) if not he goes to the door (when i'm home)  but recently he's been peeing  (lifting his leg)because he squates on the paper after i leave the house on things like my tall bird cage,or the dog food cans and the kitchen table leg.the thing is i know he knows not to because instead of an exciting welcome at the door he's trembling and hiding from me so i know when to look for a potty spot it's always pee he has never pooped in the house except on the paper. he's always provided paper when i leave just in case.I'm home with him most of the time if i can i take him with me whenever i can He always obeys what i say  i know i got very lucky when i picked him he's so very smart and loving i could go on forever about the awesome things he does but i'm  eager for advise on his marking territory problem please help!

Answer
HI Crystal,

First I must address your comment "he knows not to because instead of an exciting welcome at the door he's trembling...."  Many dog owners state that their dog 'knows' they did something wrong because of how the dog reacts upon the return home of its human. This is absolutely not true. Dogs do not have a sense of right or wrong. They do have a sense of safe/unsafe for dog. If your dog has been peeing in the house it is entirely feasible that when you've seen the mess you have given off signals of displeasure (who wouldn't?) that your dog has cued into. Dogs have nothing else to do but watch us 24/7 so they are experts at subtle body language and moods. You have set up enough of a pattern for your dog to be able to tell whether he should greet you happily or not.

You didn't mention if your dog is intact. If so, your dog will mark territory. Nothing you can do about except teach him that it is inappropriate to pee IN the house.  But you've already taught him that it is ok to pee in the house. So I highly recommend you start rigorous house training by using a crate to confine your dog whenever you aren't home and whenever you let him out and he does not pee. You will also need to thoroughly clean everything in your house to get rid of any leftover pee odor or else house training will be more difficult.

Good luck!
