how to train leave it command

Question
we have a 1 yr old male golden retriever. I want to learn how to train him "leave it" command. What we do is to leave a paper towel which he loves to destroy  on the floor and tell him leave it. If he doesn't touch it, he gets a treat. While it is during trainning, he shows no interest on the paper but after it is over, he will eventually come back to take it.

other training question is we try to train him stay in a room i.e without permission, he should not come out. when the door is closed, he won't come to challenge to open the door but if the door is opened, he will wait or stand at the door to get ready to come out. We give him treat if he doesn't come out but anytime we are not watching , we will sneak out. what is the best way to teach him , he should not come out without our permission?

he loves to eat.

Thanks!

Answer
"Leave it" is somewhat different from knowing how to ignore stuff when not being reminded, or without the cue. I'd ask for small steps (in both this and the door boundary training). I would build the behaviors by seconds at a time, and you may need to be nearby but not in sight to remind him that the same rules apply when you are not visible as when you are. Sometimes you can increase the reliability of boundary training by laying a leash on the ground, and teaching him he is not allowed to step over it. Sandy Case MEd CPDT www.positivelycanine.com
