Question
I have a 2 year old black lab mix and a six month old Siberian husky. My lab is named Jack and he is my problem dog. He is extremely dog aggressive and he is a jumper. He loves to get loose and I am afraid he is going to get hit. What are some of your suggestions to teach him not to jump on people and to walk on a leash without going into "attack mode" when he sees another dog, or cat or person or rabbit etc.I appreciate your advice. Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Melissa

I'm afraid i just can't answer questions regarding aggression by e-mail.  It can be complex and is too serious to give advice on without seeing it to make a full assessment.

When looking at any behaviour problems, always try to find the cause - what you are seeing is the symptoms.  Why does he escape - what does he want that is outside your yard?  What is the motivation behind it?

What does he want to do when he goes "into attack mode when he sees another dog, or cat or person or rabbit etc"?  Bite them? Play? Chase?

When you can understand his reasons for behaving like he does you can start to modify his behavior using training.  Anyone who gives you advice which treats the symptoms without finding out the cause is doing you and Jack a real disservice.

Good luck Melissa and sorry I am unable to help this time.
