Question

Daisy
I have a cocker spaniel , she is 11 months old and I got her when she was only 3 months old. She behaves quite well and is crate trained and she is housebroken, She is a quick learner BUT the only problem I cannot seem to fix is this. When someone comes to my house she is out of control, she runs and jumps and pees all over. Or if someone pets her other than myself or my husband she will pee.  When I took her to the vet he had said she would outgrow this. I thought by now it would have stopped. Is there a way to control this?or will she do this forever?

Answer
It's called submissive urination, and a common problem for pups - especially females. At 11 months, she may look grown up, but her brain is still very much "puppy" I would work on managing the situation so she can not become so overstimulated (allow her to greet visitors outside, on leash (so if she does leak a little it's no big deal) and leash her inside with company and practice some obedience behaviors to keep her focussed and calm (and not fixated on the situation). Have puppy training parties, where friends come over, hand her treats, but remain overall neutral - no bending over her, reaching for her or over-enthusiastic greetings. Those are the things most likely to trigger urination. And work on keeping her calm, even if it means she doesn't get off leash around guests, and doesn't get a lot of petting.
