Question
I JUST GOT A 10 MONTH OLD DOBE NAMED BANKS AND HIS PREVIOUS OWNER SAID THAT HE GOT ALONG WITH HER CATS. AND IM WANTING TO KNOW HOW I CAN INTRODUCE HIM TO MY CATS THAT HAVENT BEEN AROUND DOGS THAT MUCH? I HAVE A CAT TREE THAT IS VERY TALL AND A CRATE.SO WHAT ELSE CAN I DO NOW?

Answer
I'd teach him "leave it" (I start by using a low value treat - tell the dog "leave it" and place it under my foot. As soon as the dog looks back at me, I click and give a better treat. Then treat next to my foot, then walking past a treat or food bowl. The instant the dog focusses on you, click and treat) Then I'll take the dog to the opposite side of the room (on leash) and when he glances at the cat, cue him to leave it, as soon as he looks at me, click and treat. Gradually let him closer to the cat (on a long line) and continue. I'd make introductions on leash, and either crate him or have the cats in a different area of the house until you are absolutely sure they are okay with each other. Having an escape for the cats is also a good thing. Sandy Case MEd CPDT www.positivelycanine.com
