Question
My four year old yorkshire terrier is scared to death of other dogs, even when on walks he wont even go near other dogs and runs away, if he is forced to be with another dog and he cannot run away he becomes very aggressive and begins to bark and bite, I am looking to get another dog, Is there a way to make my yorkie more comfortable around other dogs?

Answer
Hi Stella -

Socializing a dog is sometimes very hard.  It can be done, but it requires a lot of patience and tenacity on your part.  That being said, even if you do get your little friend used to other dogs and make him stop wanting to attack, he may never become completely comfortable with them.  I do not feel it would be a good idea to get another pet until your Yorkie has worked out a little of his issues because his neurosis may rub off on the new dog after time.

My suggestion is to first make sure that he is up on his training with other commands such as sit, stay, down, heel, etc.  Being well trained helps our pets to be more secure about their place with us.  And when they are secure in their place, they are less afraid of the unknown.  When and only when he is accomplished with these things, start working on his socialization skills.

If you have a friend with an easy-going, well trained dog meet with them at a neutral place and take them for a walk next to but not within reach of each other.  Then, when your little one relaxes allow them to get near each other.  Do not allow your little dog to bite the other dog.  And if he freaks out, don't pick him up or pet him to calm him.  That will only encourage the problem.

After a few weeks of him getting used to another dog, take him on walks near other dogs, but do not allow him to have bad behavior.  A quick snap on the leash with a loud noise will get his attention.  Also, look on the internet - it is a great tool for more tips.

I hope this helped a little.  Without being able to talk to you personally, it is the best I can do.  There are a lot more involved answers here but this should get you started.

Good Luck!
