Digging dogs

Question
Hello,

I have no idea how to stop my dog digging up the garden! He is digging up the lawn, and digging on an almost daily basis. My dog is a rescue special, and looks like a larger version and scruffier version of a Scotty. My dog is 4 or 5 years old (estimate from the rescue). I got him a year ago. He was digging occasionally but since i moved to my new home has been digging very frequently. We've been here since February. We share a garden with another apartment. They have 6 month old alsation pup who also joins in the digging.

I take my dog for a walk 2 or 3 days a week. He runs off the lead for most of the walk. We walk for 45min - 1hour. He is very aggressive towards other dogs on the lead. He also jumps at me often. Sometimes his jumping is quite aggressive. He digs on days when he walks and when he doesn't.

The holes are large and distinct! He has dug a couple that are tunnels, easily big enough for him to completely disappear into. The diameter of holes is approximately the same as his diameter.

His diet consists of tinned food, dog biscuits and leftovers from our dinners. (Mostly rice based).

He digs when we are out of the house. Sometimes he digs when we are inside the house too. He is left outside in the garden most of the day, and will come into the house late in the evenings. (We have a very small apartment and my husband doesn't appreciate the dog coming in and out all the time, and getting under our feet.)

Please can you give us some suggestions? We're renting this place and don't want to end up with massive bills!!!

Many thanks,
Kaye

Answer
Hello Kaye,

This digging sounds obsessive and would indicate the dog is stressed.
You indicate he is also presenting aggression while on lead.

My suggestions would be to:

1. Teach him to walk on a heel and make him walk next to you for the majority of your walks.

2. Stop leaving him outside most of the day. Keep him inside with his pack (you) except for 10 or 15 minute periods.

3. Crate him near you for at least 45 minutes every day.

4. Give him a doggy massage before bedtime and have him sleep on the floor in your bedroom.

Your dog is 4 or 5 so you probably won't see instant results. Be patient however and these things should do it.

Good Luck!

Sandy
