At a loss!

Question
I'm at a loss as to what is going on with my dog. He is a 75 pound lab mix (I think), neutered. I know he's getting up in years but have no idea how old he actually is, the ex-owner didn't know either(he still plays like a puppy). I rescued him in 2004 in Charlotte NC from a neighbor who could have cared less if he was fed, watered, sheltered or loved. He was always kept outside on a chain with a plastic cover for shelter, hence I understand his fear of rain and thunder (and climbing under my desk and unhooking my computer lol). Ever since 2004, he has been with me...inside dog (oh the hair!), always fed, always watered, always loved, very nice beds, nails clipped, brushed, and at the vet's when need be (basically spoiled). Granted we have moved alot, he's been with me thru 7 houses, but always inside, with me. I've NEVER had a problem with him eliminating in the house until now. He has never urinated in the house.  And has only pooed when I was late coming home from work, or when I was gone during a thunderstorm (in other words, very rarely).  But now he seems to defecate every other day in the house (we just moved here 2 months ago). I let him out twice before I leave for work, I come home at lunch and let him out, and at least 4 times out during the evening. I can let him out, and 5 minutes later he is defecating in the house. What can possibly be going on????

Answer
Barring any medical causes this is most likely an environmental situation.  You need to back track a little.  Instead of just letting him out you need to make sure he defecates while he is out there.  What has taken place is that he has some how identified that it is acceptable to do what he is doing.  It could very well be that he hasn't become comfortable with going outside in this new environment so he goes inside where he is more comfortable.  I've personally witnessed dogs start doing this when they are moved or even visit other homes.  If you take the time to go out with him and make sure he is going and is comfortable and knows it is okay to go outside I believe you will eliminate your problem.  If this doesn't work you will have to go through a refresher course in basic house training using a crate.  Feel free to call and discuss this further with me if you like.  Dr. Hogan 509-991-0385 until 10 pm pacific time
