Question
Hi, I have spoken to yuo before, I have a black lab & a jack russle terrier, and was palnning on getting another dog but it never worked out at that time. Now I have deffinitly found a breed that will work with my dogs... the beagle. I was wondering however if a bouncing bundle of enrgey will be a problem with my soon to be 3 year old lab? my jack russle is just over 1, I plan to get the new puppy in the new year, once I locate a good breeder and can afford a premium puppys price. I plan to get a female as I think my jack russle would harm another male dog as he is domanate and territorial but gets along well with my lab, my mums two shituzs and when visiting my friends lab/golden mix. I am also a bit concered about the begles ability to put up with my russle and labs energy, they tear around the yard so fast at time you'd think two cheetas had flashed by!

I hope you can help me out a bit, thanks in advance for any help, we apprecate it truely,

Answer
I don't think a beagle will have a hard time with your other dogs at all. I DO encourage you to do your homework on any breeders you are thinking of buying from. Puppymills are very common and the puppies they produce are riddled with health problems.

Do not buy a puppy from an ad in a newspaper or in a pet store. If you can, talk to some beagle owners and find out where they got their puppies from and whether they were happy with the breeder and have their puppies had any health or behavior problems? Talk to your local branch of the AKC and get some recommendations from them. Be prepared to spend several hundred dollars on a well bred pup.

You can also check with a beagle rescue group. They often have puppies and are not for profit so their prices will be better.

And, of course, you will want to have the puppy fixed before 6 months of age to reduce the chances of any conflicts between your dogs.

Good luck!
