Female Great Dane estrus and spaying

Question
I have a female great Dane, 9 months old. She has gone into her estrus cycle and I had her spay.  I also have a male Dane that is 3 years old and the puppies mother who is two years old. The mother has been spay.  MY question is this.  I had her spay during what I think was the first week of her cycle.  It has now been almost a week and my male is still going berserk.  How long will she continue to emit the pheromones since she has already been spay.  My male is 200 lbs and this is a really hard situation. I am keeping the separated.   All the whining and crying is making me crazy!  I am estimating that if she has a normal cycle the three weeks will be up on Nov 2. I was just hoping I wouldn't have to go through the entire cycle if I had her spay, but I don't think that will be the case.

Thanks!

Answer
Hi CJ,

You've stumped me!

I can tell you that the average heat cycle for a dog is approximately 3 weeks (21 days) and since this is an average, some heats are shorter (as little as 7-10 days), others are longer (4 weeks or more).

If the surgeon simply tied or obstructed the Fallopian tubes (the channel where the eggs must pass into the uterus) in order to make your dog sterile, she would still come into heat, attract males, and attempt to breed. With a complete ovariohysterectomy a dog stops going through the "heat" cycle.

Assuming your vet did a ovariohysterectomy, I would think that she would stop emitting pheromones well before the 3 week length of her heat cycle. You should ask your vet this question, to get a definitive answer.

Sorry I couldn't be more of a help,
Patti
