Question
Hi I have a 5 yrs old pug who has been sick about a week. She has very bad smelly diarrhea very thin like water with little white dots in it. she will still eat and drink but has lost alot of weight. She is still very active and wants to play. I have done the rice and water diet and slowly given her other foods but it didn't seem to help. Do you have any ideals of what I can do. I can afford to take her to the vet do to my own sickness costs. Please help.

Thank You Tabitha

Answer
Since she's had bad diarrhea for a week, I would have to recommend a trip to the vet, especially since she is losing weight.  Sometimes they can work with you on payments, or other financial suggestions if money is an issue.  However, if you cannot take her in then I would suggest two things.  One, you can give her an Immodium.  That might help her with the diarrhea.  Next, I would keep her off of all food for 24 hours.  Then, put her on a boiled chicken and rice diet.  Giving her different kinds of food can be what is keeping her stomach so upset.  Stick with just the chicken and rice, nothing else, until her diarrhea improves.  Then you can slowly put her back on her normal diet.  I would also recommend taking her temperature.  You can do this rectally with a normal thermometer.  Normal temperature for a dog is 101.  103.5 or higher is considered a fever and above 105 requires immediate medical attention.  There are many things that can cause diarrhea, from dietary indiscretion, to pancreatitis or parvo.  If she is vomiting as well then I would definitely take her to the vet.  I hope she gets better.
