yorkie and cat

Question
Dear Becky,
I live alone with my 5 yr. old Yorkie. I started working longer shifts and my Yorlie was alone 12-14 hrs a day. He has the run of the house and a porch outside to "go" on.But I was so upset that he might be lonley( he is NOT destructive at all,I just thought he might be sad.) I decided to get him a kitten as I love cats and he lived with cats when he was a puppy. I brought the kitty home today. But i am not sure how to introduce them. I let him watch her,but he looks away as if she is not there. But if she runs around he barks and wants to chase her as if she is prey. I had him on his leash so he didn't hurt her. Help, what am I doing wrong ? how can I make us into a family? Thaks, Susan

Answer
Hi Susan!
I have had dogs and cats together for as long as I can remember and the dogs still chase the cats!  I think the cats enjoy it, to be honest.  If it were me, I would just let them go and see what happens.  The cat can jump up on things to get away from your little dog, can't she ? I think it's a really good idea to have company for your Yorkie.  They will eventually get along good, it just takes a little time.  You need to move the litter box to a place where your dog cannot get into though.
