rectal pylops

Question
my 9 yr old siberian husky has a 2-3 mm rectal pylop like bump on the outside of her rectum - is it possible that she may have a hemorrhoid?

Answer
Jessica,

Hemorrhoids do occur in dogs, so yes it's possible.

Other possibilities (without seeing your pet of course) include but are not limited to: anal gland problems (abscess) or benign/malignant growths.  If it is more polyp shaped and doesn't seem to be in the region of the anal sacs (just inside the rectum at 4 o'clock and 7 o'clock) then you are probably dealing with one of the other two.

If your vet diagnoses the problem as hemorrhoids, you can expect some anti-inflammatory medication such as carprofen (Rimadyl), Baytril (enrofloxacin) or Deramaxx (deracoxib).

Do not give your pet any human anti-inflammatory meds such as Advil (ibuprofen) or Tylenol (acetaminophen). Both these drugs can have disastrous effects on your pet's health by destroying the kidneys.

If it is found that the polyps may be tumors, then surgical removal would most likely be necessary as well as a biopsy to check for malignancy.

See your vet and they can put your Husky on the road to recovery. :)

Thanks for the question and have a great night,

Laura
