Question
Our vet has put our Wheaton Terrier on a Hills Science Diet and has suggested no treats to see if allergic symptoms disappear. Recommended only carrots and string beans as treats (neither are well accepted). Are there any treats out there that might be acceptable (no animal protein, wheat etc.)? Allergic symptoms are itching and frequent build-up of gunk in ears...Thanks.

Answer
What your vet is doing is what is called a food trial. one of the few tools that a veterinarian has to identify a possible food cause for the alergy symptoms. diviation from the prescribed diet can interfer with the trial. so I would stick to the diet and if the other items are not accepted then try using some of the food as treats. at least for the duration of the trial. A veterinarian may use many different brand name foods, from prescription to rare, premium diets, in a food trial. I would suggest keeping track of the types of food used in the trial and regular visits to the vet to find the cause. as food alergies are realy not well understood, and dificult to diagnose. A attentive and determined owner is one of the missing links to understanding food alergies.
