Sneezing and Honking

Question
Hi There - I just want you to know that if this was an emergency I would definately be at the vet right now!  I have a 7 year old border colliexshephard mix, I've had her since 6 weeks old.  She is completely up to date on her shots  and is currently on Advantage heartworm/flea preventative.  She is due to take this today.  She is in good health, a little overweight but does not have any joint problems.  The past couple of days she has been sneezing a few times a day and doing that horrible honking thing where it sounds like she is trying to clear something out of her nose.  She has done this once and a while in the past, but now it is frequently during the day.  She is eating, breathing and going to the bathroom like normal.  I should mention that she has skin allergies and is eating holistic/alternative protien food.   Cou;ld this be a bout of seasonal allergies? Thank you for your response.

Answer
Elizabeth,

That is pretty common this time of year. I would suggest thoroughly cleaning your home (dusting well, sprinkling a pet hair lifting aid like the one made by Arm & Hammer on the carpet prior to vacuuming, etc.) and spraying Febreze Allergen Reducer over the carpet, furniture, and upholstery. Often times something this simple can help! If it continues, you can try Benadryl - call your veterinarian first to get the right dosage for her weight since you didn't mention to me what it is. That horrible honking noise is probably just a reverse sneeze if it is coming from her nose, or phlegm clearing if it is coming from her throat. If it persists for more than 2 weeks, I would consult with her doctor.

Good luck!
