1 year old and 7 year old golden scratches NO STOP

Question
We have two goldens that seem to scratch all the time and are shedding like crazy.  They have been treated for fleas over the past 6 months. We have been using frontline and keeping them bathed. Someone recommended that we feed them ProPlan that is was excellent for their coats.  Our 1 year old golden is shedding like CRAZY and scratching all the time! Our dogs in the past have always shed in the Spring and Fall and have not scratch like this.  Do you have any advice?

Answer
I have no evidence that Pro Plan is much better than anything else.  I have personally seen literally thousands of dogs doing fine on Pro Plan adult chicken and rice and little else.  I have less personal experience with dogs on Iams, but know it is fine too.  If you are feeding Pro Plan, it shouldn't be the problem.  Some dogs will develop allergies to what they are eating, no matter what it is.  Best to limit what they eat when young to make working around it if the dog develops allergies later.

I brush my dogs regularly, and seldom if ever bathe them.  When you do bath a dog, it is very important to rinse out the last bit of shampoo.

Some dogs have fleas despite the best flea remedies.  Pull the hair back at the base of the tail.  If you see or feel dark, reddish specks, your dog has fleas.  You may need to add treating the yard and house to your flea program.

If you are doing as I do, and the dogs still has an itching problem, it is time to talk to the vet.  It could some kind of a skin problem or allergies.
