Neutering a Yorkie who has allergic reactions to vaccines

Question
I am having my 4.3pound, 9month old Yorkie Neutered Thursday.  I am worried because everytime he has vaccines he has an allergic reaction.  My vet plans on giving him steroids and benedryl first but I am still scared to death something will happen when he is under anesthesia.  Do you have any experience in this area?

Answer
Angela,

When a dog is sensitive to vaccines he may be sensitive to anesthesia as well, but not always.  Vaccines deal with the immune system while anesthetic deals with the brain and circulatory systems.  He may do just fine under anesthesia.

There are different drugs that can be used to induce anesthesia, the most common medication is called Propofol and is considered the safest medication.  It is also the most commonly used drug.  I would request that your vet be present when the drug to induce is given, but chances are he will be fine.

A neuter is a short procedure, as long as both testicles are descended.  The whole thing should not take any longer than 30 minutes.
