Question
Our basset/lab cross 4 yr-old came home from a friend's cabin this weekend with a droopy tail....is nearly always up like a "flag."  Now it droops.  Cause?  What to do?

Answer
Hi John,

When a dog doesn't hold it's tale as it usually does, it can mean an actual injury to the tale itself, or it can mean a spine injury. There is also a condition known as "Limber Tail syndrome" that is most often seen in sporting breeds. Typically, the dog's tail goes limp and hangs down from the tail base or is held horizontally three to four inches and then drops down. The dog may seem uncomfortable and in some pain. This is not a serious condition and complete recovery is usually seen within two weeks and often occurs within a few days.
The cause of Limber Tail is not known although it is thought to be associated with hard workouts, heavy hunting, and swimming in water that is either too cold or too warm.

If were my dog, I'd give it a day or two, (assuming the dog didn't seem to be in pain) to see if it improved any. If isn't any improvement in two days, then I'd make an appointment to see the vet. If your dog seems to be in pain, then don't wait to see the vet.

Best of luck,
Patti
