Older dogs hair loss (German Shepard mix)

 I have an almost 11 year old German Shepard/Black Lab mix. He's a bigger dog, 112 lbs, & he seems to be shedding a ton lately! It is way more than a usual "seasonal" change. Any Ideas?

Hi Brad,

Excessive and unusual shedding can be a sign of a thyroid problem. If your dog is neutered, the adrenal gland makes testosterone in the absence of the testicles. At your dog's age, the secretions from the adrenal start to fall off and there could be a hormone related problem where he will require extra testosterone to keep his hair and skin normal.

After a medical problem has been ruled out by your veterinarian, then you have to look at other factors, such as diet.
