Answer

Hi Bob,

Whomever told you not to feed your dog turkey, is wrong. Turkey is a perfectly wonderful source of protein for dogs, and as you've noted, it is an ingredient in many commercially made dog foods. Generally, the warnings about turkey are referring to feeding your dog turkey off the table (all those thanksgiving leftovers.) The main concern about dogs eating turkey is the skin. Turkey skin is currently suspected to be linked to pancreatis in dogs. It's also it's high in fat and hard to digest.  You don't want to feed a dog turkey bones either, they're too delicate and can splinter, but turkey meat is great.

Of course, turkey meat (or any meat) by itself isn't a complete diet for a dog, but adding fresh cooked turkey to your dog's food, or using a turkey based commercial dog food is a fine choice for dogs.

Best of luck,
Patti
