Urinating in crate

Question
QUESTION: I have a new 9 week old puppy that I got from the Humane Society.  With her previously being in a crate and urinating when she wants to will she eventually stop urinating in her new crate at home.  I work and check on her about every 4 hrs.  I know this is too long for her, at this age, to hold it but will she eventually learn as she gets older to not pee in her crate.  Any suggestions would be helpful.  She is peeing while I'm gone and during the night.  I do get up to let her out when whining but again she has already urinated in between her cries to go out.

ANSWER: I have had no problem with even 7 week olds making it 4 hours.  The problem may be her previous poor care.  It wouldn't hurt to have the vet check her too.  A UTI is easy to fix, but makes keeping the crate dry difficult.

Try filling a Kong with peanut butter and freezing it and giving it to her.  She may get too busy licking it out to urinate.  blocking off the crate so she just has room to stretch out may help too.

A grid in the crate will reduce the problem until you solve it.  hey are available with the crates, but expensive and hard to find. A piece of closely spaced wire closet shelving from a home supply place is cheaper. I am now using a plastic vegetable bin with plenty of holes drilled in the bottom.

QUESTION: I already have a crate to block off.  Do you think if she doesn't have an UTI that she will eventually grow out of this since she is just a pup?

Answer
It is a difficult problem I have never had.  Nobody else seems to have a good solution either.  You may have read that it doesn't happen.  Well, I see many questions about it, and few reports of a quick, easy solution.  Follow what I suggested, andshe may eventually decide she likes a dry crate.
