bloody discharge

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2 year old St. Bernard who is pregnant.  She has had a bloody discharge for 6 days.  She is eating a little and drinking a lot.  Her milk is in.  She has been licking a lot, restless at times, but also sleeps a lot.  She doesn't act like she's in any pain.  I am not sure of her due date because she came in heat earlier than usual and she was being taken care of by a friend and we were out of town.  Her temp is usually 100.4.  yesterday it dropped to 99.3 and today it is back up to 100.4. My questions are when do you think she will deliver, and is it normal to have bloody discharge for this long?  I called my vet and they said that if she acted like she was in pain then I should bring her in, otherwise just wait for her to give birth, but I'm worried.

ANSWER: GET THAT DOG TO THE VET!!!!   SHE SHOULD NOT HAVE A DISCHARGE, SOMETHING IS WRONG
How did you make out at the vet....

QUESTION: First of all i'm very upset with the vet that I've had for 3 years!   Basically they treated me like I was overacting and told me that they couldn't get her in until next week!  I don't know why they said that i have always had a good relationship with my vet.  I have never owed them any money or anything!  But i did call another vet in my area and they got her in right away.... they did a c-section and she only had one pup that was alive.  we are all home now and I'm doing my best with the puppy.  thanks again!

Answer
It is always amazing to me how little vets know about breeding and danger signs.   I cant believe your vet didn't suspect anything when there was a bloody discharge though.  That is the sign of dead pups (also a green or black discharge)  I am also so sorry I didn't read my e-mail earlier.  I have a virus and just collapsed in bed...Every hour counts in that scenario, please forgive me.   Sometimes this trauma can affect the pup.   Make sure he is strong enough to hang onto a nipple, if not, gently squeeze the nipple til milk flows and open the pups mouth a little so he tastes it.  If he is too weak to hold on, sit with him and hold him up so all he has to do is drink (and not hold on too). If you have this problem it only lasts about a day.  Make sure the mom and pup are very warm,  that is even more important than eating for a day old pup.  He doesn't have any brothers or sisters to keep him warm, so I would check into a heated puppy warmer.  Check out the web for this, maybe petedge.com has it or cherrybrook.com
Or put a safe heater in the room, but not too close...The temp in the room should be up there quite a bit, above 75.
Good luck Hon, and I am so sorry about the loss.
