Hair loss

Question
QUESTION: I own a four year old male Yorkie named Albie.  He weighs appx. 11 pounds and is a very very light eater.  He does not like people food and I never see him eating his dry dog food.  About two years ago my Albie lost all of his hair except that on his head, face and bottom half of his legs.  My vet tested him for everything she could think of that would cause hair loss but all tests came back negative.  The final diagnosis was that his sebaceous glands had atrophied.  She recommended I give him hot oil treatments every week.  So I did and his hair did start coming back, but it is a very slow process.  Could his condition be diet related.  The dog food I try to feed him is Nutro Max.  But like I said, he is a very selective eater and when he does it is very little.

ANSWER: Wow!!!  How awful for you and little Albie!!!!  I have some suggestions for you.
Will he eat chicken?  You can cook up some chicken ( white chicken breast) give him about 2 tablespoons of the this on top of some Innova EVO wet dog food.  Innova Evo has no grains... I bet he could be allergic to grains.

I would like to see him eat some Innova Evo dry dog food, too.
The Nutro Max is not that good at all!  I would rate it a "5" on a scale of 1-10.
So, try him on the new food ASAP...  Give him some time to get accustomed to  it.  You can add a little parmesan grated cheese to the chicken or Innova Evo Canned or dry food.

Next, I would get him onto the NuVET Plus - Skin and coat healer and Immune System Booster.  I bet his immune system is a mess.  He may have loads of environmental allergies besides some food allergies.
NuVET will cost you about .55 cents per day / Give order code 81098 when ordering the NuVET Plus -  you may want to get him the powder - they also make a wafer, too...

Will he eat some yogurt?  If he will the Activia Brand with the active cultures is wonderful for his skin and coat.  I would give him 1/2 or 1/4 a cup per day, if he will take it!

Please get back to me and let me know how he is doing.  We will need to add a few more supplements or oils, as time goes by.  Don't want to overload him right yet.

QUESTION: Thank you so much Marie for you promptness.  You definitely present a fresh approach to my Albie Squigmyre's problem and I definitely am going to try it.  I also have another Yorkie named Sam who is as health as a horse.  Will the same diet be okay for him?  Also, I got on line and printed about two thousand recipes, or so it seems, for homemade dog food.  I am now thoroughly confused as to what would make a good, nourishing dog food - one with all the nutrients my two boys would require.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Again - Can you get the Innova Evo brand of dog food?  It would be a great option for both of your Yorkies....
As for feeding homemade, it is great if you have the time.  Also, you do need to add many supplements to home made foods.
I can give you some guidance on homemade cooking.
There is this gal called " Hawaii Pet Chef" , she has a great web site and some wonderful books and videos to purchase on cooking.

Please get both the kids onto some NuVET Plus - It is the best you can do for your dogs... call Joan , she is in the office now, she would be glad to help with the order...
